| Yeah, that's better... the -c5 in the command tells ping to do exactly just that.
Now I really have no idea why curl cannot get the response we are looking for. Either curl is still broken or google... |

I had somewhat a similar issue. It seems the package in the repo is a bit outdated. What worked for me:
