Double-check trinidad points 2) and 4) above. This is why:

UEFI proves troublesome while installing Linux. As long as the hardware is old enough not to have it, you can ignore the issue.

Shotwell cannot display files without proper file endings - try checking on that.
I used to like F-Spot but it has been untended for some years now. XnView would be an up-to-date option.

Just a side note on "confidential data":
Shred and/or srm may be ineffective on SSDs, so beware of a false sense of security in case the aging HDD has been replaced. |

Using Opera as a backup browser on 2.8, no trouble with standard installation.
If you are primarily after speed, try the Slimjet browser - stable, brisk, no issues.
