The apt-get autoremove operation appears to have freed up space in my linux boot partition - it was at 97% but is now 24% full. Routine update completed without a problem this morning.

Using Timeshift v19.08 Timeshift - Settings - Location allows me to specify a USB connected drive as the destination of the system back up.  The SATA attached 'data' drive also appears as an option.
